Mission: To develop and coordinate the wise use of natural, economic and human resources to improve the quality of life for all residents in southwest Nebraska. Southwest Nebraska Resource Conservation and Development is a non-profit 501(c) 3 corporation encompassing the counties of Chase, Dundy, Frontier, Furnas, Hayes, Hitchcock, Perkins and Red Willow. Membership includes counties, Natural Resources Districts, communities, economic development groups and other civic organizations located in the eight county region. The RC&D area is located between Interstate 80 and Interstate 70 approximately half way between Omaha and Denver. Kansas borders it on the south and Colorado on the west. The regions cover 4.2 million acres with a population of 35,600. Agriculture is the primary industry, which includes corn, wheat, sorghum, hay, milo and livestock. One third of the cropland is irrigated (676,350 acres). Other major industry includes Dayco Hose & Rubber Manufacturing, Valmont Industries and agriculture supply companies. Tourists to the area enjoy water recreation in the four beautiful lakes located throughout the region, upland game hunting of pheasant, turkey, quail, and deer and visiting numerous historical sites. |
